The superb Buddhist Art at the nearby Mogao Caves is the main attraction to the tourists. This vast series of grottoes - stretching 1700m along a canyon wall - lay forgotten for centuries amid the sands of Gobi. The admission fees cover a visit to 10-12 'open' caves with guide; additional fees (approx. RMB 100-500) would be asked to visit some unusual caves. Extreme cares are taken to protect the vulnerable artifacts. The picturesque Crescent Moon Lake is surrounded by heaps (hills) of desert sand. Do not underestimate the difficulties to climb on the loose sand to the hilltop. Camel riding, sand gliding, wind surfing... are available.
